1.  Actually, The Brady Bunch ran from 1969 to 1974—exactly the same years in which Bill Owens was shooting and trying to publish Suburbia.  It would be particularly interesting to know if Owens’ style had been influenced at all by the kitschiness of the show.
2.  Put less euphemistically, press photographs ultimately exist to advertise their stories.
3.  This was, of course, decades before Columbine, Desperate Housewives, and widespread fear of kidnappers and serial killers.
4.  What the importance is of the visual appearance of this landscape for the people who live there.

6.  Also, this fence example is a perfect figure for the role photography plays in the construction of the suburban landscape.  Photography is a system of visual editing.  So is the fence.  The photography provides an example for how to eliminate the unwanted elements of one’s visual field.  Both the fence and photography are ways of isolating what’s important.
7.  Eugenia cited this as a primary concern of hers.  She grew up in Alameda and San Leandro and idealized Berkeley.  Frequent Mallard family trips to Berkeley effectively passed this idealization on to all of her children but Sean.
